Dewey Defeats Truman Newspaper GOP Wins White House

Price: $295.00

Description: This is an original Chicago Daily Tribune from November 3, 1948. Perhaps the most recognizable headline of the 20th century is that which appeared on the front page of this title and date--but an earlier edition. The earlier edition read "Dewey Defeats Truman", made famous by the photo showing Harry S. Truman smiling and holding that famous newspaper. This is the "Final" days edition printed the very same day but after the the editors softened the phrasing proclaiming Dewey the victor, but still unaware of the true final outcome of the election, by proclaiming: "G.O.P. WINS WHITE HOUSE". Includes the text "Dewey and Warren swept the country in the Presidential election yesterday. The early returns indicated that the Republican ticket had won by an overwhelming majority of electoral votes. President Truman went down to defeat with few states outside of the south..." . This later addition is extremely hard to find but is not as well known as the famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline. Actually, this is only the second copy of this edition we have owned in the past 30 years.

Product Condition: Good, eight page front section, toning throughout and small rips on edges

Product number: PE-HST15

Dewey Defeats Truman Original & Historic Newspaper

Price: $1,975.00

Description: We are fortunate to have discovered another original copy of this famous edition of the Chicago Tribune of November 3, 1948. It is the original and authentic newspaper. It is the full and complete newspaper with all sections included.

This is arguably the most famous and sought after newspaper of all time. When the decision to print this paper was made, returns were coming in very slowly and time was running out before the deadline for the edition. The Tribune staff, based on the early returns, decided Dewey would be the next President. After the newspaper was delivered to the street, more returns came in and showed that Truman would be the ultimate winner and be reelected as President. The already delivered "error" newspapers were gathered for return by staff members sent out to pick them up from newsstands and homes in the Chicago area. It also has the paragraph of type in the upside down position as all original examples have since the newspaper workers in haste to get the edition to the newsstands made the error. Original editions of this newspaper are becoming increasingly scarce.

This is only the fourteen copy of this historic paper that we have owned in 30+ years. In fact, we would say it is in the top 5% of all papers we have seen in terms of condition. Here is a description of the condition. Overall we would rate it as Very Good ++. Toning is very minimal for this age paper and one of the better examples we've seen. This is the complete paper. The outside edges are clean and sharp. The spine is very good with no tears or cuts. The horizontal center fold (where the most wear usually shows in old newspapers is in very good condition with no separation or tears.  Inside section/pages are in very good condition.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most famous newspapers ever produced. If you are searching for one of these rare newspapers that is in excellent condition this is the one, and at a price that is less than you would likely pay at an auction house.
